[Mirza Ghalib]

mu_amalaa = mystery
intaKhaab = selection
ruswaa = notorious

It has been a month since the launch of Andaaz-e-BayaaN Aur on Mirza Ghalib's death anniversary (Feb 15th).   Posting the couplets has been an enjoyable experience for me as I have (re)discovered his gems and have been amazed anew by the poet and the man. I hope you have enjoyed the selections and it has made you want to read and learn more about this great poet.

MIRZA ASADULLAH KHAN GHALIB (1797-1869)
Ghalib was born in Agra and started composing poetry when he was only 10-years old. When he was barely 13, he got married to Umrao Begum the sister of a Nawab of Loharu. She did not bore him any child and they adopted Arif as their son.
Soon after that Ghalib arrived in Delhi and apart from a journey to Calcutta (1827-29), he lived there almost all his life (his residence area; Gallee Qasim Jaan... still exsists).
Ghalib had a complete command on oriental knowledge and especially on the Persian language. Although he regarded his Persian verse as most worthy to be read, he is best remembered for the comparatively smaller collection of Urdu Ghazals.
The diction of his poetry --- notably the easier phase --- is highly Persianized and his thoughts often gripping and intense.
An appealing humour, irony and clear-sighted detachment pervades the entire collection of Ghalib, and finds expression of his views about God, heaven and hell, the universe, humanity, his beloved and himself.
MY PICK OF GHALIB's (MANY) VERSES;
SUBB KAHAN KUCCH LALA O' GUL MEIN NUMAYEN HOGAYEEN...
KHAAK MEIN KIYA SOORTEIN HOUNGEE K PINHAN HOGAYEEN...
WOH NIGAHEIN KIYON HOEE JAATEE HEIN YA'RAB...DIL K PAAR...
JO MERI KOTAHEEAY QISMAT SE MUSRGAAN HOGAYEEN...
YUNN HEE ROUTAA RAHA GHALIB TOW AIE AHL-E-JEHAN...
DEKHNA INN BASSTTEEYON KO TUMM...K VEERAAN HOGAYEEN !

Ghair lein Mehfil mein Bosay Jaam K
Hum rahein yoon Tashna Lub Paigham K

Khustagi ka tum se Kya Shikwa' k Yeh
Hathkhunday hein charkhay neeli faam k

Khut likhein gey garchay matlab kuch na ho
Hum toh Ashiq hein Tumharay Naam k

Raat Pee zamzam pay may aur subhadam
Dhoye dhabbay jaamae ehraam k

Dil ko ankhon nay phansaya kya magar
yeh bhi halqay hein tumharay daam k

Shah ki hai ghusal sehat ki khabar
dekhiey kab din phirren Hammam k

ISHQ NAY GHALIB NIKKAMMA KAR DIYA
WARNA HUM BHI ADMI THAY KAAM K

Editor's note:
I have this unique honor to be a descendant from Ghalib's wife Umrao Begum....who was
my great great great grand-dad's sister. I also have the honor to have acted in
PTV's play titled "MEIN KAUN HOUN AIE HUM NAFASON" written by Aliya Imam
in 1969 on the 100th death anniversary of Ghalib, produced by Kunwar Aftab.
I played the character of Ghalib's best friend 'Kaalay Saheb'.
Back in 1967 I also acted in a documentary film produced by DFP-Govt of
Pakistan, directed by Khaleeq Ibrahim Khaleeq...where I played the character
of my father's great grand-dad Nawab Allaudin Khan ALAI who was the student
of Ghalib and it was on Alai's request that Ghalib wrote the famous Ghazal;
"MEIN HOUN MUSHTAQ-E-JAFFA, MUJHE PE JAFFA AUR SAHEE...."
The ghazal sung by Noor Jehan...was picturized with me (as Alai) sitting in
front of Ghalib (played by Subhani Ba'Yunus). The ghazal's last line
clearly mentions " MUJHE SE GHALIB...ALAI NE GHAZAL LIKHWAIEE...."
....At one point in the PTV play....Ghalib while reading ALAI's letter to him...
saying "Aap Mere Dada Hein..." replies by writing "Mian...Mein Tumhara Dada
Nahin...DIL-Dada Houn..." (that's a fact taken from the archives of Ghalib's works
and letters...
